Some wedding days just feel different from the moment they begin. Rachel & Ryan’s beautiful Burlington Plantation wedding in Charles City, Virginia filled with dusty blue details, stunning florals, and joyful moments. This Burlington Plantation wedding in Charles City, Virginia was one of those days — calm, joyful, and filled with the kind of genuine love that makes everyone around them feel it too.
As a Burlington Plantation wedding photographer, this venue has always held a special place in my heart. I’ve photographed weddings here before as a second shooter and as an associate photographer, but this was my first time photographing a wedding at Burlington Plantation as Ashley Hesse Photos — and I truly couldn’t have asked for a better couple to share that milestone with.
Located in Charles City, Virginia, Burlington Plantation is one of the most beautiful and peaceful wedding venues in the area. The historic estate sits along the James River, surrounded by wide open landscapes, towering trees, and some of the most beautiful natural light you could ask for on a wedding day.
For couples looking for a Virginia plantation wedding venue, Burlington Plantation offers the perfect combination of historic charm and relaxed elegance. The grounds provide incredible variety for photography, from the river views to the stately estate home and the expansive lawns where ceremonies and receptions often take place.
As a photographer, venues like this are a dream because the property offers so many beautiful backdrops without ever needing to leave the venue.
Rachel and Ryan’s wedding day had a feeling that every photographer hopes for — it was peaceful, organized, and full of genuine emotion.
There was no rush, no chaos, and no stress filling the air. Instead, the entire day felt intentional and centered around what truly mattered: celebrating their relationship with the people they love most.
Rachel was an absolutely stunning bride, and one of the kindest people you could meet. The entire bridal party brought such a fun, supportive energy to the day that made photographing every moment feel effortless.
Ryan matched that energy perfectly — the way he looked at Rachel throughout the day made it clear just how much love these two share.
Those are the moments photographers live for.
The design of the day fit Burlington Plantation perfectly.
The color palette centered around neutral tones and dusty blues, which complemented the historic estate and natural surroundings beautifully. Every detail felt thoughtful and elegant without ever feeling overdone.
And the florals? Absolutely incredible.
From Rachel’s bouquet to the ceremony arrangements, the flowers elevated the entire aesthetic of the day while still allowing the natural beauty of Burlington Plantation to shine.
One of the best parts of photographing a Burlington Plantation wedding is the incredible light the property gets in the evening.
As the sun begins to set across the fields and the James River, the entire venue glows with soft golden light — creating the perfect moment for sunset portraits.
Rachel and Ryan took a few quiet minutes together during golden hour, and those portraits ended up being some of my favorite images of the entire day.
